The focus of Southport Salsa Thursdays is to always create a friendly, welcoming night where you can learn to dance, have fun and make friends.

The teachers are always warm and friendly.

They will help you to feel welcome, relaxed and at ease and to get to know the other people that come along.

You never have to worry about coming to salsa on your own, most people do.

Salsa is one of the easiest and fastest ways to make friends.

You can learn to dance at your own pace and have fun in the process.

The classes teach Cuban style salsa.

However, for the 2 hours of social dancing after the classes lots of experienced Salsa dancers of all styles come along to join us so we play different styles of salsa music, lots of Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mambo, and modern salsa tracks that encompass all styles.

We often play a few bachata, cha-cha, merengue and other random tracks that you can dance salsa to.  And, we take requests, if we can find it we will play it! 😊

Beginners class - level 1:

The Beginners class is suitable for those that have never danced salsa before or if you want a refresher on the basics. You will learn the salsa rhythm and simple salsa moves to dance with a partner.

The leader role is traditionally the male role and the follower role is traditionally the female role.

However if you want to learn 'the other' role (just as Alison did many moons ago) then that is absolutely fine. Just let your teacher know so we don't teach you the wrong steps!

Improvers class - level 2:

Once you are comfortable with the basics in the beginners class you are ready to move into the Improvers class.

To come into the Improvers it is really helpful if you are somewhat familiar with the following moves:

  • Dile que no

  • Guapea

  • Enchufla

  • Sombrero (simple version)

  • Setenta (simple version)

Improvers (7pm) can also join the Beginners class (8pm) to continue learning and reinforcing the most important rhythm and footwork fundamentals.

If you are experienced in partner dancing (eg. ballroom or jive) but are new to salsa have a chat with Alison to check which class may be best for you.

Intermediate class - level 3:

In the Intermediate class we learn more complex moves and sequences.

It is assumed for the intermediate class that you are familiar and comfortable with dile que no, guapea, enchufla, sombrero and setenta as the more complex moves and sequences build on and further develop these moves.

Intermediate students (8pm) can also attend the earlier Improvers class (7pm) to keep reinforcing the the simpler most fundamental moves - and to enjoy a slightly easier class!

Let Alison know if you are ever unsure which class to attend or if you feel ready to move up to the next level.

Enjoy the journey folks.

Salsa is a social dance with no exams or assessment.

You can learn at your own pace in your own way.
